How to limit the size of database files (ARCSERVE)

This is not a CA recommended procedure it does work though.

The largest log file on our system is the Tape.log file which holds debug information for the application.

You cannot edit the file, limit it or access it from the application. Once you note it as a problem the file is too big to open. However you can replace it.

Firstly make sure that ARCSERVE is not actively open in a window, services running on NT4 or WIn2K Pro or Server are OK.

Then do the following:
1. Open Explorer and navigate to the ARCSERVE share.
2. Open the LOG folder
3. Create a new text file there called Tape.log.new
4. Rename Tape.log --> Tape.log.old
5. Rename Tape.log.new --> Tape.log
6. Restart the ARCSERVE manager, goto the Jobstatus window.

If everything is OK you should not have a problem from here on out.

This has been working at our site for only a couple of days. We do not know of any long term issues.

How to reset CAROOT password in ARCServe Backup

1.    Open a command prompt on the server where you want to change/reset the caroot password.
2.    In the command prompt browse to the drive where you have ARCServe installed
       (e.g. C:\Program Files\CA\...)
3.    Once in the ARCServe folder type in the following: cstop
4.    This will stop the ARCServe services that are running.
5.    When all services are stopped open the Windows Explorer and browse to the folder:
       C:\Program Files\CA\BrightStor ARCserve Backup\Data\Discovery
       Here you will find a folder that has the name of your server.
6.    Rename this folder.
7.    Back in the command prompt type in the following: cstart
8.    This will start the ARCServe services that were stopped in item 4.
9.    Still in the command prompt type in the following:
       Authsetup/p "password" where “password” is what you want the new password to be.
10.  Close the command prompt and try to open ARCServe with the new password.

BOOTMGR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

If you receive above error message after booting up your windows 7 machine,

It indicates that your operating system boot sector is missing or corrupted.

Follow below steps to fix the problem. You must have windows 7 OS installer to proceed.

1. Insert windows 7 OS installer on your CD/DVD ROM drive.
2. Reboot your computer and set CD/DVD drive as the primary boot device on your BIOS. To get in to the BIOS, press F2 for Dell and F10 for HP and go to Boot Sequence.
3. Press any key when "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" message appears.
4. Enter your language and other preferences and click "Next" to continue.
5. Select "Repair your computer"
   
6. System Recovery Options will load, select "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an operating system to repair" and select Windows 7 under Operating System and click Next.
   
7. Select Repair and restart
8. Select Startup Repair under Choose a recovery tool on System Recovery Options
9. Remove the windows 7 installation disc on your CD/DVD drive.
10. Click Finish to restart your computer to complete the repairs

nsrlcpd is not running for this jukebox, Networker 7.6.3

Sometimes Networker Management Console software seem to be not functioning well.
I could start the application but could not mount/unmout, label, inventory the tapes on a tape drive.
Error message is "nsrlcpd is not running for this jukebox". And sometimes library gets disabled.
Scheduled backup is not running also.
This problem occurred intermittently, but I don't know the cause.

On a physical library, manually mounting or unmounting of tapes are fine.
Rebooting the library and server may not fix the issue. but sometimes it does.

These are the steps I made to resolve the issue.

1. Shutdown library
2. Close Networker Management Console and shutdown server
3. Start library
4. Once library is up, start networker server
5. On a networker server, open services.msc and start these services: Network Backup & recovery, EMC GST Service, Networker Remote Exec. Service
6. Start Networker Management Console and check if you could able to mount or inventory
7. If error still appear, restart Networker Remote Exec. Service service again.
8. Open the Networker Management console again as it will close automatically after service is restarted.
9. After performing above procedure, My networker is now working.

CEBU to BACOLOD / BACOLOD to CEBU

Travelling from Cebu to Bacolod / Bacolod to Cebu have daily trips for both plane and sea except on unfavorable weather condition. If you will choose to travel by plane, airport is located in Lapu-Lapu City (Mactan International Airport) for Cebu and in Silay City (New Bacolod-Silay airport) for Negros Occidental.

But if you decided to travel by sea, there are several options that you can consider.

1. Taking a Bus for direct trip from Cebu to Bacolod or vice-versa

Terminal in Cebu is North Bus Terminal, while in Bacolod is Sambok Terminal if via Don Salvador and North Bus Terminal if via Escalante and Tabuelan. Direct Trip is less hassle especially you have lots of belongings. Example if you're from Bacolod, from there bus will go directly to the port and will board on a ferry. All passengers in a bus are guaranteed to have ferry ticket. Once arrived to the other port, bus will travel going to Cebu North Bus Terminal.

2. Cutting Trip

Cutting Trip is cheaper but tiring. If you want to travel from Cebu to Bacolod, you can ride on a bus from South Bus Terminal going to Toledo. Fare is around 60-80 pesos. Then ride a pedicab from Terminal going to Toledo seaport (5-10 pesos). In the port, fall in line to get your ticket in either Fastcraft or Lite Ferry of your choice then ready for boarding. Below is the shipping lines rate and schedule. Once you arrive in San Carlos port, ride on a pedicab going to the bus terminal (5-10 pesos). Then ride a bus or v-hire going to Bacolod. Fare is around 90-120 pesos.

Change Default Programs for a specific file type (Windows 7)

Different files that are opened by a specific application by default are set in Default Programs.

If you want to use other application to open a file,  right-click on the file and select Open with > Choose default program and choose the program you want to open the file.

If you want to change the default program to open a specific file type, follow below steps.

• Click Start/Windows button > All Programs >  Default Programs
• Select Associate a file type or protocol with a program

• Select a file type and click Change program

• Choose a program you want to open your selected file type in the Recommended Programs
• Click the Other Programs to view other options
• If you still could not find the program you want, click Browse to location your program

•  Click OK and you're done

“Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer”

Everytime I log in to my Windows 7 computer I get this error:

• Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger than the size you specified

After clicking OK, it would open the virtual memory settings.
I think this happen because you are out memory on your drive.

Possible Solutions: Login as administrator

1. Free some space on your disk/drive. Then restart you computer. You might have a very low memory.
2. Open the virtual memory settings by right-clicking on Computer → Properties → Advanced System Settings 

      → click the Advanced tab
      → Under Performance, click Setting

      → go toAdvanced tab, finally under Virtual Memory section click the Change button.

      → Uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives checkbox. 

      → Set a “Custom size” for the paging file on the C drive: 0MB initial, 0MB maximum.

      → Click OK, close all dialog boxes, and restart your computer.

Other option: login on your computer then open virtual memory settings. Check the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives checkbox.

Folder Access Denied

Sometimes when deleting a folder. You receive an error message:

• “Folder Access Denied. You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from the computer’s administrator to make changes to this folder”  

This error message appear after migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7
or connecting a hard drive with files to the computer

All you have to do is to delete the folder in a Windows XP operating system.
(Share the folder and access it on Windows XP OS, then delete the folder)
